What Is a Typical Day In Rehab?

Residential rehab is very structured, however, a typical day can be very different from person-to-person. No two addictions are the same, which means no two treatment programs are the same. However, when it comes to day-to-day activities, everything in treatment follows a structured schedule. This structure is extremely important when it comes to recovery, and one of the most essential building blocks of a new life.

Being able to establish a daily routine is helpful not just people suffering from addiction, but for all people who need some type of a lifestyle change. Since humans thrive on routine and knowing what to expect everyday, it’s important to have structure that people can focus on. During an active addiction, most daily routines go out the window. Days are spent finding ways to obtain the next high or rush. One day can blend into the next while on binge cycles, and responsibilities quickly fall to the wayside. As simple as it sounds, the best way to begin a new life is to set up a routine and structure to follow from the moment you wake up until bedtime.

A Typical Day Schedule

Mornings include breakfast, a morning meeting and small group therapy with your Primary Therapist. After lunch, there is opportunity for some recreation time using the basketball, tennis or volleyball courts or to simply talk a peaceful walk outside. The rest of the afternoon consists of educational group sessions. The evening starts with a wrap up group after dinner, followed by a 12-Step meeting and the day ends with free time.

Types of Treatment

During the times of day that therapy takes place, there can be many different options depending on your needs.

12 Step Meetings

One of the most important pieces of recovery at Pinelands Recovery Center is to take advantage of the daily 12 Step Meetings. “Working your steps”, as it is called, is very beneficial to the recovery process. Not only will you be surrendering yourself to your recovery process, but you will have the opportunity to apologize to loved ones for any of your misgivings and begin the work of setting goals and preparing for the future.

The 12 Step program can also be continued long after finishing treatment at Pinelands. This is one of the many benefits of the 12 Step program, as you can find meetings just about anywhere in the country. As the saying goes, “if you work it, it works.”

Behavioral Therapy

Depending on your needs, you will be able to find your niche at Pinelands Recovery Center. These are the groups you will meet with during a typical day. If you are a young adult, you can let your time at treatment be a time to make healthy new relationships that can become lifelong friendships. As you enjoy sober fun with your peers, you can work on building a future free of controlling substances and you can learn life-coping skills that help you to successfully battle anxiety, loneliness, and self-doubt.

In addition, adult groups can find kinship with each other in their similar challenges and responsibilities, such as marriage, work, and family. Chronic relapsers can work together to exchange valuable information and insight, since experience tends to be the best teacher. If you have faced a particular trauma in your life, you can also meet with other peers who have experienced trauma as well, for a judge-free safe space to share and heal.

Holistic Therapy

In addition to evidence-based treatment, holistic therapy is extremely important in a typical day in recovery. This can be simple things such as healthy meals, a quiet walk around our serene surroundings or a fun game of basketball. No matter what recreation you choose, it is built into your day so that you can let off steam in a positive, fun way.

Family Therapy

Addiction is a family disease. Chances are, your addiction has hurt the people closest to you. They can be feeling resentment, abandonment or hurt feelings due to your words or actions while you were in your addiction. Substance abuse makes people act differently than they normally would, so being able to apologize to your family and work through these issues is a major step in recovery. Healing your family from the pain that your addiction has caused is essential, and it can begin here.
